Project Onchiota is a website designed to disseminate the scientific information concerning some of the most important issues that humanity faces today. That said, it will always be a work in progress. While I don't expect this website to be the "premier" source for finding information; it will however, be considered an adequate starting point (I hope). My primary motivation for designing this website is not only to provide a foundation for issues that many know little about, but to equip those with a means for wading through the ominous pools of misinformation out there, especially on the internet. The internet is a wonderful resource for information, unfortunately it is also a repository for misinformation. I would also like to focus on those that have the intent to deliberately deceive, and, honestly, I intend to exploit these persons for such intentions. Rightfully so. How do these people sleep at night?!
Some topics, in the public's eye, are controversial. Among the most notable of which is the theory of anthropogenic global warming (AGW). Due to recent publicity of the topic, i.e. Al Gore's "Inconvenient Truth", the coming of the IPCC's Fourth Assessment Report, media exposure (with some "hyping"), the issue has become a matter of public debate. The topic has also received great attention from lobbies, think tanks, and advocacies, to name a few. The topic has also received significant attention from industry, economists, and some politicians. What I would ultimately like to do is analyze the issue from the standpoint of those on both sides of the "issue" and assess the motivation of those that deliberately misinform the public through the media or other means, especially by those that lack scientific credentials.
A question I’ll probably never be able to answer is why people simply,
and blindly, buy into information that, in essence, is only consistent with
their ideology and ignore the information that is not? Regardless of ideology,
scientific issues need to be assessed ethically and objectively. Although this
website may appear to some as an advocacy tool in itself, I can not stress enough
that this is being done based on the peer-reviewed scientific information to
date.
